Funding for an accessible vehicle / conversion van

by Julie
(Thornhill, ON Canada)

We just got word that we will be getting funding from March of Dimes ($15,000) towards an accessible vehicle.

However, because we have used President's Choice CC in the past, we cannot get help towards the cost of the vehicle itself and we cannot afford to take on the cost of a vehicle at the moment.

We are in a desperate situation. Any suggestions?

Do you know of any other charities that will help with the cost of the vehicle itself?

Editor's note:

Hi Julie. It may be that your best bet is to look at used wheelchair vans. It may be able to meet your needs and get much, much closer to your budget for a handicap van.

You may have good luck in finding used wheelchair vans for sale at the same companies that offer wheelchair lifts for vans or the conversion vans themselves.

Let us know how you make out!

Hi Julie,
by: Glenda

Just wanted to tell you to "Hang in there" first off,,and I;m going through the same right now..
The quotes that I have gotten towards a conversion are outrageous in price, and to get our Van that we have right now converted, would be a waste of time and of money,,our Van won't last much longer..
I have had some luck in finding some used Wheelchair vans for a fairly good price. Were just waiting on word from PCC to see if our daughter is approved.
Then I can proceed to start the hunt for a vechicle in good condition.
It is a lengthy process,,but don't give up.
Did you try Easter Seals or the Sunshine Foundation?..they may be of assistance as well..
...Again,,the best of luck to you:)

March of Dimes

Although it's wonderful that March of Dimes offers $15,000 towards accessible vehicles, it's way to complicated to get it.

I thought the point was to help people get mobile, but as an example, the case of the commentor prior to me, they can't afford the van in the first place, shouldn't the funding be tweaked so that family's can actually get the vehicle through the March of Dimes without having to mortgage their house ? I can't stand charity that goes to the wrong people.

You know whose getting the $15,000 for a vehicle....the people who can walk into a dealership and pay cash for a vehicle, then apply to March of Dimes. This is not how it should work.
