Integrated Special Needs Camp: Camp Awakening (Ontario)
Kilcoo Camp - summer camp for boys
Camp Oconto - Ontario summer camp for girls
This special needs summer camp offers integrated, residential, outdoor recreation for kids and youth with physical disabilities, ages 9-18.
We still have spaces available for youth with physical disabilities to attend camp this summer! Please help us reach potential campers and their families.
For the summer of 2011, we are trying to connect with boys of all ages (9-18) and young girls (9-12).
Camp Awakening campers:
Are 9 to 18 years of age and have a physical disability
Can walk (with or without an assistive device) OR use a manual wheelchair by themselves
Are independent in their daily living routine (eating, dressing and toileting) most of the time
Are comfortable boating and swimming in a lake
Enjoy group activities and the great outdoors!
Camp Awakening provides integrated outdoor recreation for children and youth with physical disabilities.
We operate out of two mainstream summer camps in Ontario - Kilcoo Camp for boys in the Haliburton Highlands and Camp Oconto for girls north of Kingston.
Our campers have a wide range of disabilities such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida & hydrocephalus, muscular dystrophy, juvenile arthritis, epilepsy, spinal cord & brain injury, vision loss, hearing loss, and amputation.
Our campers, ages 9 to 18, succeed in conquering new challenges at their own pace and at their own level of ability. They enjoy wilderness adventures through our canoe tripping program, and traditional in-camp activities like swimming, sailing, kayaking, land sports, rock wall climbing (boys), horseback riding (girls), archery and handicrafts.
Each 2-week session welcomes 7 campers and 4 staff.
Please note: Camp Awakening is a specialty program for campers with physical disabilities wishing to improve their physical skills and independence.
Information about other programs (specialized or general) for campers with developmental or behavioural concerns may be found on the Ontario Camps Association website
Financial assistance is available and we have never turned a camper away for a financial reason.
