Ontario works and the Child disability benefit

Hi everyone, my sons doctor recently filled out the t2201 forms for him. The onset date is 2005.

We are Ontario works recipients and I am wondering what will happen with the retroactive payments if he is approved for the CDB.

Will I get to keep the CDB lump sum payment or will it be considered income?

To get CDB...
by: Anonymous

You have to submit a T2201 - Disability Tax Credit Certificate and submit it to Canada Revenue for approval.

Attach a letter saying that you would like to apply retroactivity for the Child Disability Benefit, and Revenue Canada will reassess your tax return for the previous 10 years or the onset year, whichever is more recent.

If approved, you will get a lump sum for retroactive CDB payments, but I'm still not sure how retroactivity would affect your (the parent's) income tax return.

I have reviewed the Ontario Works policy directives regarding the application of retroactive CDB payments as income or asset, and it's still not clear on how this money would be treated. I'd appreciate more factual information regarding this.

child disability benefit
by: Anonymous

Hello everyone
Here some information I know because recently I deal with that for my kids.
After you will receive notice of determination regarding your child disability benefit CRA will calculate automatically CDB for current and two previous years. Processing time is between 4-6 weeks. For years prior to that you need to send them a written request. The lump sum will be deposit in your bank account if you have direct deposit. Also you will receive this benefit with regular CCTB until your child turn 18 years old. After that you need to apply for ODSP.
Hope this will be helpful.

Confused NEW
by: Anonymous

My son was recently approved for the child disability benefit because he has ASD. The govergovernment did the calculation for it and it showed up on the CRA website today but it only shows what the new monthly amount is not the whole past three years retroactive amount. Should I be concerned does this mean I don't automatically get the past 3 years? It says he is eligible for back to 2012... Even though his doctor should have said he was born with this since he was. I'm just really confused I was expecting to see the retroactive amount and now I'm worried.

CDB retro payments and Ontario Works NEW
by: Anonymous

CDB retroactive payments are not considered income. But the interest accrued on the amount that is in the bank account is considered income. Ontario works needs to know how the money is being spent

disability benefit entitlement NEW
by: Anonymous

I believe that 10 years is the max. But it depends when the dr. believes the child became disabled or the type of disability. But when it is calculated, they give the first 3 years only. You have to write a letter asking for the remainder.
