Private Special Needs School to close

free web stats
The Dr. Abraham Shore She'arim Hebrew Day School will be closing at the end of this school year, according to the North York Mirror.

The private school operates out of the Bathurst Jewish Community Centre on Bathurst St, near Sheppard Avenue.

The reason cited for closure is money. "By the end of the school year, She'arim's deficit is expected to be $700,000."

That's not exactly small change, so it's hard to blame the decision makers.

Still, at a yearly tuition of $18,000, the families of the existing 75 students obviously felt that the public school system couldn't provide the support needed for their special needs kids.

Yet, that's exactly where they may be headed next year.

To help out, the nearby Anne and Max Tannenbaum Community Hebrew Academy (CHAT) on Wilmington Avenue will be creating 18 new spaces for special needs kids.

Hopefully they can also find some room for some of the 25 staff members from She'arim too.
