re: disablity tax credit

by Lorraine Burwell
(Ontario)

Hi Graeme

My son is turning 18 January 26, 2011. I applied to the disability Tax Credit for him in 2000 (not exactly sure) but I didn't have to go for a review until 2011, but he is going to be 18 anyway.

Anyway, we have an appointment in the next few days for ODSP for when he turns 18.

He is globally delayed and I take care of him (single). Anyway, I was talking to a neighbour who said I should have been getting a monthly cheque for taking care of him. I get the DTC but is there more out there???

thanks
lori

DTC
by: Graeme Treeby

Good Afternoon Lori

Perhaps your neighbor is referring to the Assistance for Children With Severe Disabilities funds? These funds are means tested and are designed to help families cope with the extra costs of supporting a child with a disability. They end at age 18 when the ODSP kicks in.

With respect to the DTC, you should make sure that you reapply for it or attend a review so that it will continue after he turns 18. It sounds like CRA wants to confirm that your son still has a disability. Assuming he does, the credit will continue and you will also become eligible for the Caregiver Tax Credit as long as he lives with you.

Cheers...Graeme
