Second autism registry to be launched in Canada
Ottawa police and Autism Ontario (Ottawa chapter) will soon announce a voluntary autism registry. The idea is to help police and other first responders (emergency medical and fire fighters) be better prepared to deal with people with autism.
According to the CBC, "Ottawa Sgt. Norm Sandre says the new registry will include basic personal information as well as potential triggers that might set off a normally approachable person."
This registry will mimic the original autism registry launched in Miramichi, New Brunswick, in conjunction with Autism Resources Miramichi Inc.
In addition to training provided to emergency personnel, the registry allows details about autistic individuals to be available on the 911 database, including parent names, if desired.
Both registries are voluntary. The Miramichi registry requires a $ 25. registration fee with the application. There is no word yet as to whether a fee will also be applicable for the Ottawa registry.
