Free car maintenance for single moms (Toronto area)

A new type of Mother's Day event is taking shape in Toronto this year, thanks to an innovative auto service company.

The 14 year old Autotex Service Centre already bills itself as being "female friendly", and this year is introducing a new Road Angel Program to help "struggling single moms".

That description fits a disproportionate number of parents of children with special needs.

The stats are actually quite depressing. I've read reports that peg divorce rates at over 85% for families with special needs kids.

And, struggling with finances is the most common scenario too. There are often many additional costs to deal with.

And time required in both direct care and dealing with "the system" make it difficult to commit to a "normal"job, even if you did have the energy.

So I was pleased to see that at least one company is actually trying to help.

As quoted in the Toronto Star, owner Robert Yousefian says:

"We see a lot of cars coming into the facility in which safety has been neglected. A lot of single moms work very hard to care for their kids and push vehicle maintenance and repairs to the bottom of their priority list."

So he created the Road Angel program launching this May, hoping to make it an annual event - even expand it to include auto service businesses.

Very impressive.

The only thing that gives pause is the process of determining who is eligible. According to the article, eligibility for "free maintenance and repair service" will be determined by a panel made up of "members of the auto service industry, parts suppliers and other sponsors."

Hopeful recipients of the service need to apply. "They will have to prove that they need help and hopefully no one will try to take advantage of the program."

Applications will be accepted during the month of May 2012 only. As of writing (April 28th), the requirements have not yet been posted online.

I hope that this worthy idea will make the process easy and avoid the dis-spiriting process of requesting assistance that we parents of special needs children are all too familiar with.

Hopefully they will accept documentation from the organizations that we have already jumped through hoops for, such as government support ACSD / SSAH stubs, or Access to Entertainment free admission cards.

In fact, it would be lovely if the group added their services to the Access cards program, to avoid duplicate efforts for all concerned.

Come May 1st, you can go to the company's website at: autotex.ca, or visit them at:
1145 North Service Road, Mississauga

For more information about this Road Angel Program, you can contact
contact Rob by email or by phone at (905) 302-1008.

Let's hope that this program is easy to access, successful, and spreads across the country.

A parent who has done a great deal of research on this question has made an excellent post, and asks whether anyone else has done the math.

Reader Robert Boulter of Moncton, New Brunswick, asks whether the statistics of life expectancy and the operational rules of the RDSP make sense.

It makes for great reading.

I encourage anyone else who knows RDSP in detail to comment on his article.

There are lots of reasons why people with disabilities benefit from a regular massage. It relaxes muscles, improves blood flow, and stimulates brain / muscle interaction.

If you're looking for a place to buy a percussion massager online in Canadian dollars, try the options below.

Sears Canada also offers physical stores, but you can't rely on stock - call ahead, or save yourself time and energy and just order online below.

Both CSN and Hayneedle ship to Canada, and are great companies.

I can recommend the Homedics brand, as that is what we have used for years, and are very happy with it.
