Support for adult special needs children?

by Louise
(Canada)

Once your child is considered an adult are there resources available to them. Our daughter will soon be finished high School and is in Life Skills program. We are having difficulty finding any resources available to her needs. She is add/pdd/ autism spectrum, she is highly functioning but still requires assistance in certain daily functions.

As the years have passed and our continual involvement with the program it has been quite apparwent there is still little information for parents to assist them in their plight to find information to assist them once the children are finished school.

Schools believe that the skills obtained in this program have given them the skills to obtain jobs, which at this point we are going to obtain data to prove otherwise, they still don't have the skills or knowledge of what next!

We would appreciate any information you have available.
Sincerely Louise

Passport Funding
by: Lori A

My daughter receives Passport funding to assist with her activities and support worker. We live outside of a major city so there isn't much to do in our community that doesn't involve our daughter being transported to and from the activity. Passport funding is amazingly flexible and allows her to participate in her community.

I found this link to assist people in seeing if Passport funding is right or even available for their child after leaving high school.

Passport funding
by: Maria

You can contact your lead agency as you need to complete an application. You may also contact Family Service Toronto. There is a waiting list to receive funding. There are also ministry funded programs. You first need to connect with a lead agency. Check the DSTO website

Support for Adults
by: Graeme

In Ontario, there is a program called Passport. It is designed to provide funding for adults with developmental disabilities to access activities in the community once they have left the school system. Are you located in Ontario?

Cheers...Graeme
